About the hotel

Eight individually furnished apartments in a historic building on Brunnsgränd

Gamla Stan Apartments is not a hotel in the traditional sense but a collection of self-catering apartments in a historic property at Brunnsgränd 5 in Stockholm's Old Town. The building has its roots in the Middle Ages and early 17th century, and that character is clearly evident in the apartments' irregular shapes, sloped angles and alcoves. There is no staffed reception in the conventional sense, and check-in is coordinated separately with the property owner, which means that arrival time needs to be arranged in advance. The building has no lift.

The property contains eight individually furnished apartments ranging from 27 to 105 square metres and accommodate between 2 and 8 guests depending on apartment size. This is an important distinction: the studio apartment at 27 square metres is sized for a couple, whilst the largest apartment with a roof terrace sleeps up to six guests and offers a completely different spatial experience with separate bedrooms. No breakfast is included in any of the options, which is a natural consequence of the self-catering concept.

Booking here means renting an entire apartment, not a hotel room. It affects both price level, flexibility and the daily rhythm during your stay. Each apartment has its own kitchen, its own bathroom and its own living room furniture, making the concept more akin to short-term rental accommodation than a classic hotel. For those planning a longer stay or travelling in a group, it offers a different kind of freedom of movement compared to a standard hotel with shared areas and scheduled service times.

Location near the Royal Palace and Djurgården Ferry

Brunnsgränd 5 is located in the heart of Gamla Stan, just around the corner from the Royal Palace and Stockholm's Medieval Museum. The Nobel Museum, Storkyrkan and the Djurgården ferry terminal at Skeppsbron can all be reached on foot within a few minutes. It is a location that makes it possible to get around without public transport for much of a city visit, which is a practical advantage for those who want to experience Stockholm's historic centre up close.

Gamla Stan underground station is approximately five minutes' walk away, providing direct connections to Central Station and the rest of the underground network. Slottsbacken bus stop is nearby. Parking in the area is not included in the rent, but there are public car parks in the vicinity, which is relevant for those arriving by car. Gamla Stan is otherwise an area with limited car traffic and narrow streets, which is why a car is rarely the most convenient option during your actual stay.

Restaurants and cafés are in the immediate vicinity along Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan. The restaurant Fem Små Hus, which serves European food, is said to be approximately 100 metres from the property. The location also means you are staying in the middle of one of Stockholm's most visited tourist areas, which during peak season is noticeable in the form of movement and crowds on the streets outside. Those seeking a quieter residential area should weigh this against the advantages of the central and well-serviced location.

Fully equipped kitchen and washing machine in every apartment

One of the clearest differences from a standard hotel room is that all apartments have a fully equipped kitchen with cooker, oven, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, coffee maker, kettle and toaster, as well as kitchen utensils and crockery. A washing machine is included in every apartment, making the property practical for longer stays or travellers who want to keep luggage weight down. Free WiFi is available in all apartments. Each apartment has a flat-screen TV with streaming services, seating area, dining area and storage spaces. Bed linen and towels are included at no extra cost.

The bathroom includes a shower, hairdryer, towels and toiletries. Baths are available in some apartments. The concept is based on self-catering, which means complete flexibility regarding meals and the opportunity to shop locally in Gamla Stan's shops and markets. There is no room service, no restaurant on site and no shared breakfast room, which is a trade-off that guests need to consider. Daily housekeeping is not included either, unlike what a traditional hotel normally offers. Pets are not allowed and the property is non-smoking.

The property has eight apartments, including one duplex apartment with a roof terrace and views over the Baltic Sea. Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out by 11:00 at the latest. There is no lift in the building, which is worth considering when booking, particularly for travellers with heavy luggage or reduced mobility. Parking is not included in the price, but public parking is available near the property at Brunnsgränd 5.

From studio apartment on ground floor to duplex penthouse with roof terrace

The largest apartment in the property is a duplex apartment with a private roof terrace and views over Gamla Stan's rooftops and the Baltic Sea. It is the only unit with that combination of space, elevation and outdoor area, and it sleeps up to six guests. The apartment is a natural first choice for groups or families with higher space requirements and outdoor environment needs. All eight apartments in the property offer free WiFi, and each unit is equipped with a fully equipped kitchen including washing machine, flat-screen TV with streaming services, hairdryer as well as towels and toiletries. Pets are not allowed and the property is non-smoking.

The studio apartment at 27 square metres is located on the ground floor and faces a small courtyard. It is a completely different spatial character: compact and without outdoor space. It suits a couple who prioritise location over space and do not plan to spend much time indoors. The middle options, one-bedroom apartments at 38 to 45 square metres, have courtyard or city views and their own patio or terrace areas in some cases, making them a balanced option for those who want a bit more space without paying for the largest unit. The building has medieval origins with roots in the early 17th century, and there is no lift in the property, something to consider when choosing a floor.

Check-in is available from 15:00 and check-out by 11:00 at the latest. Since there is no staffed reception around the clock, it is important to coordinate your arrival time in advance with the property owner, a practical step that requires a bit more planning than at a standard hotel, particularly for late arrivals.
