About the hotel
Jugendpalatset on Strandvägen – from ambassador's residence to hotel since 1966
Hotel Diplomat occupies the eastern wing of the Klippan block, Strandvägen 7C, an Art Nouveau building designed by the architectural firm Hagström & Ekman and constructed 1907–1911. The building was designed in a U-shape with two wings facing the street and features a façade that is a distinctive element of Strandvägen's cohesive streetscape. Strandvägen was developed on the initiative of King Oscar II, who wished to give Stockholm a representative ceremonial avenue, and the block was originally intended for exclusive private residences. That the building was designed in Art Nouveau style was typical of the period – the style dominated European architecture around the turn of the 20th century and suited the ornamental façades that characterise Strandvägen.
The eastern wing, 7C, was purchased in 1917 by the Malmström family and subsequently functioned as a boarding house and rental property for, among others, Persian, Hungarian, Italian and Canadian embassies. This is where the hotel's name originates – the building was long a hub for diplomatic activity in Stockholm. That several embassies chose this particular address is hardly surprising: the location on Strandvägen, close to government offices and the royal palace, was strategically attractive for foreign representations. In 1966, the entire wing was converted into a hotel and launched as Hotel Diplomat.
The hotel is family-owned and part of Diplomat Collection, where the fourth and fifth generations are active. Membership in Preferred Hotels & Resorts represents an international hotel partnership; Diplomat remains privately owned. The current interior was designed by architect Per Öberg and combines the Art Nouveau building's original character with Scandinavian design in light, muted tones. The hotel has 130 rooms and suites, four conference rooms, a restaurant, two cocktail bars, a gym and the wellness facility The Retreat. The building has been a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2020, reflecting its architectural and historical status.
Rooms with views over Nybroviken and differences between room categories
The hotel's 130 rooms and suites are individually furnished with Scandinavian design and DUX beds with the hotel's own bedding collection, The Diplomat Collection, which is also sold separately. All rooms feature blackout curtains, generous work space, smart TV with Chromecast and luxury toiletries. Bathroom design varies between rooms, with shower or bathtub depending on category and room. That each room is individually furnished rather than identically furnished is a deliberate choice that emphasises the hotel's character as a privately owned boutique hotel rather than a standardised chain.
Room categories vary in size, location and view. Standard Single is the single room option, at 12–15 square metres. This should be distinguished from Standard Room, which measures 15–18 square metres and has a 160 centimetre wide bed. Superior offers more floor space, 18–24 square metres, whilst suites provide larger living areas. Master Sea View Suite Dagmar, at 69 square metres, is one of the hotel's larger options and has water views over Nybroviken. Some rooms and suites have a balcony – some with water views, others overlooking the courtyard. Because the building is a U-shaped house with wings facing the street, the view varies considerably depending on room number, and guests who prioritise water views should specify this when booking.
The hotel offers room service around the clock, but this is not included in the room rate – it is a paid service. For guests arriving by car, the hotel's concierge can assist with information about parking and car services; cost and availability should be included in booking planning. WiFi is complimentary throughout the facility, and work space is available in the room. For a longer stay, the difference between a compact single room and a larger room is therefore relevant even if days are spent away from the hotel.
Seasonal menus and afternoon tea with Nybroviken outside the window
The hotel's restaurant is a Scandinavian brasserie offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch and afternoon tea. The kitchen combines Nordic ingredients with international influences and works with seasonally adapted menus. The restaurant is part of the hotel's offering but also welcomes visitors coming solely for a meal or an afternoon by the water. Weekday lunch is served on weekdays and changes with the season. For the guest, this differs from relying on the same lunch offering all week: a weekend stay can instead be planned around brunch or afternoon tea, depending on current service.
During the summer season, outdoor seating opens towards Nybroviken. It offers direct views over the water and passing traffic on the promenade. The terrace is suitable for those wishing to dine outdoors with a view, but is naturally weather-dependent and seasonally open. Up a flight of stairs from the hotel entrance is the cocktail bar, where classic drinks and aged whisky are served in a retro-inspired setting. The bar can be hired for private events, making it an option for corporate gatherings or smaller social occasions in a central location.
Afternoon tea has been served at Hotel Diplomat since the 1960s and is one of the more established offerings in the restaurant's menu – an option for those seeking a classic Stockholm experience rather than a new concept restaurant. The hotel states that there are two cocktail bars and a restaurant in the facility. For a smaller private dinner, there is also the private dining room Djurgården with seating for up to twelve people. This provides a different arrangement than a standard restaurant table for families or colleagues wishing to gather the party separately.
The Retreat for private relaxation and meetings in the Strandvägen block
The wellness facility The Retreat is a private relaxation space with sauna, hammam, mosaic shower, sun loungers and minibar with health drinks and snacks. The space is booked by the hour and is not an open spa section but a separate area for one person or a group at a time. The private format means guests avoid sharing the space with strangers, which can be a decisive factor for those seeking privacy rather than a large communal spa facility. Massage treatments, beauty treatments, nail care and styling services can be booked separately. The hotel also has a fully equipped gym with exercise machines and free weights as well as a hair salon and skincare clinic in the facility.
The hotel describes its meeting spaces as totalling 200 square metres. The rooms can be furnished for, among other things, cinema-style seating, board meetings or receptions, with varying capacity depending on room and arrangement. The hotel's 130 rooms provide capacity for overnight conference participants, and the restaurant can be integrated into the conference programme. For a meeting that continues over dinner, it is possible to coordinate room, meal and accommodation at the same address. For an organiser, seating and need for separate group work is more important than the total area of the rooms; request a plan that suits your own meeting.
The location on Strandvägen means the hotel is within walking distance of the National Museum, the Hallwyl Museum and Dramaten. Djurgården is reached along the promenade, and Norrmalmstorg and Stureplan with shops and restaurants are in the block north of the hotel. These distances make the hotel equally suitable for tourists and business travellers. The hotel's Guest Relations can assist with arranging airport transport, and private transfer is offered for a fee. The hotel is affiliated with the Preferred Hotels & Resorts loyalty programme.
