Stockholm has a reputation for being an expensive city, but with a little research and flexibility you can find really good hotel prices. Here are our best tips for budget-conscious travellers.
1. Choose the right time
Hotel prices in Stockholm vary considerably depending on season and day of the week:
- Cheapest: November-February (except Christmas/New Year), Sunday-Thursday
- Most expensive: June-August, Midsummer, major conferences
2. Stay slightly outside the city centre
Stockholm’s underground is efficient and hotels in areas such as Södermalm, Kungsholmen or Sundbyberg are often considerably cheaper than in the City, but only 10-15 minutes away.
Recommended budget areas:
- Södermalm – trendy and affordable
- Hammarby Sjöstad – modern and peaceful
- Solna – near arenas and shopping centre
- Älvsjö – near the exhibition centre
3. Compare, compare, compare
Never book on the first website you find. Use comparison sites and then check the hotel’s own website – sometimes better prices are available there.
4. Make use of membership schemes
Hotel chain loyalty programmes often offer better prices. IKEA Family members get discounts at Scandic, and similar offers are available at other chains.
5. Consider alternative accommodation
- Hostels with private rooms – often with hotel standards
- Bed & Breakfast – a more personal alternative
- Apartment hotels – perfect for longer stays
6. Book breakfast separately
Hotel breakfast often costs 150-250 kr. Eat instead at a nearby café – cheaper and usually better!
