First time in Stockholm: choose your hotel based on your walks

Gamla Stan, Central Station or Nybroviken? Three hotel bases for you who want to discover Stockholm on foot.

Hotel Gamla Stan
Hotel Gamla Stan — ett av hotellen i jämförelsen.

Your first visit to Stockholm becomes easier if you choose a clear base instead of trying to stay near everything. The water, bridges and districts mean that different hotel addresses suit different daily plans. Start by deciding whether you primarily want to experience the older city centre, travel smoothly or walk between quays and the city.

Hotel Gamla Stan for the historic city district

Hotel Gamla Stan is the natural choice in the comparison if you want the older city environment to characterise your stay. See the hotel’s location and room categories on the official website. The advantage of such a choice is that the area you want to discover also becomes the place where you start and end your day.

The trade-off concerns above all your arrival with luggage and how much of the rest of Stockholm you want to see. Plan the route from the station to the hotel and check accessibility if stairs or uneven surfaces are problematic. A historic quarter is not automatically the easiest choice for all types of traveller.

Continental for those who want to be able to change their daily plans

Scandic Continental has an address on Vasagatan and a central city base, according to Scandic. Our assessment is that it is a practical option for those arriving by train who want to mix walks with public transport when weather or energy changes.

You then primarily choose the transport options and the city location. If the picture of your trip is instead to open the door to the oldest alleyways every morning, Gamla Stan is a better fit. Also pay attention to which room category you book, as Continental offers both rooms with and without windows.

Strand for quay walks and a broader city weekend

Radisson Collection Strand is located by Nybroviken and describes a central location with access to several attractions on its hotel website. It is the option for you if you want to make the water a clear part of your walks without spending your entire stay in Gamla Stan.

The compromise is that you need to give a little more thought to the journey to and from the station. For a weekend with light packing, this may be unimportant. For a single night, heavy luggage and an early train, the station location can provide greater practical benefit.

Build a walking day that works

Choose two main destinations per day and include a sitting break between them. Check the actual walking route across the bridges instead of assessing distance straight across the water. Save an alternative route using public transport for rain or tired legs. Your first visit does not need to include every district to feel complete.

For a short first-time visit, it may be better to explore one area properly than to try to see the whole city. Base your choice on what you most want to remember and let the rest become possible additions.

Our choice: Hotel Gamla Stan for historic surroundings, Continental for flexible logistics and Strand for waterside city walks. Then compare the same dates, number of guests and cancellation terms. The best location is the one that makes your priority days easy, not the hotel that is called most central in its advertising.
